Who needs Clean Truck Check?

Vehicle types typically covered

Class 7 and Class 8 tractors, straight trucks, refuse haulers, dump trucks, and many specialty diesel vehicles above the weight threshold are in scope. Buses and certain alternative-fuel heavy-duty vehicles may also need to register depending on model year, engine type, and how the unit is used on California roads.

CARB defines eligibility using GVWR, fuel type, and operating characteristics—not simply whether a vehicle is “commercial.” A privately owned heavy pickup used below the threshold may be excluded, while a California-based box truck at 26,000 pounds GVWR almost certainly is not.
