What to expect on emissions test day
A little preparation turns test day from stressful to routine. Whether you booked a shop appointment or mobile yard testing, here is what happens before, during, and after your Clean Truck Check inspection.
Before the appointment
Confirm your CTC-VIS due window is open and CARB state fees are paid (commonly cited at $32.13—verify on arb.ca.gov). Pre-screen dash lamps, visible smoke, and recent fault codes—especially for OBD tests where readiness monitors must be set.
Gather registration and ensure drivers know the appointment window. For mobile visits, clear parking and notify gate staff. Warm older engines for opacity testing if the tester requests operating temperature.

During the inspection
The credentialed tester verifies vehicle identity, connects approved equipment, and runs the CARB-prescribed procedure. OBD inspections focus on diagnostic data—not a full dealer teardown. Opacity tests measure exhaust density with a certified meter at the stack.
You do not need to leave the truck for days unless you booked a shop that combines compliance testing with unrelated repairs. Most standalone compliance visits finish in under an hour.
Ask questions if the tester flags issues—they can explain fail reasons even when they cannot repair on the spot (unless they operate a full service shop separately).
After pass or fail
Results transmit electronically to CTC-VIS. Log in within a few days to confirm compliant status on pass. On fail, open a repair plan immediately—do not return to linehaul service hoping the issue disappears.
Retests require a new appointment and fee. Understand penalties if you operate while non-compliant. Review costs when budgeting repairs plus a second inspection.
